GovConJudicata Weekly Debrief (5/31–6/4)

This week's Weekly Debrief covers robotic process automation, Federal websites fail accessibility tests, IRS modernization efforts, White House ransomware warning, Army modernization, and Space Force's plans for an office for commercial services.

Tech

  • "Robotic process automation has become a critical tool for agencies looking to modernize and divest from legacy systems, agency officials said."

  • "Federal websites are not as accessible for those with disabilities as the law mandates they should be, according to a report released Thursday by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation."

IRS

  • "The Biden administration is taking the first step in its multi-year plan to help the IRS dig out from a decade of budget and workforce cuts, starting with plans to significantly increase its IT modernization spending. The administration’s first full budget request, released Friday, would give the IRS $13.2 billion — a more than 10% increase for current levels."

Cyber

  • "The White House on Thursday sent out a memo to industry leaders warning them to take steps to protect themselves against ransomware in light of several high-profile attacks on U.S. companies this year as well as a general uptick documented throughout the coronavirus pandemic."

Defense

  • "The newly sworn-in Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth has said that modernization programs remain “a top priority” in her first message to service personnel."

  • "The U.S. Space Force will set up a single office to assess and secure commercial services, ranging from traditional satellite communications to satellite imagery, the service’s No. 2 official said June 2. The change will occur with the establishment of Space Systems Command, or SSC, a new field command designed to replace the Space and Missile Systems Center as the Space Force’s main organization for acquiring and fielding space systems, Vice Chief of Space Operations Gen. David Thompson said during the MilSat Symposium."
