GovConJudicata Weekly Debrief (7/20–24)

This week's Weekly Debrief covers several interesting – and elevated – topics, including Treasury's push for a new cloud, SBA's data exposure response, Space Force acquisition and new logo, Energy's blueprint for a quantum internet, and a report on the Pentagon's UFO research.

Treasury

  • NextGov – Treasury Department Wants To Move Its Cloud Into Another Cloud

  • "The Fiscal Service—the Treasury Department component charged with compiling and ensuring public access to the government’s financial accounting—wants to move its cloud servers into a third-party’s cloud infrastructure. The service issued a request for information Thursday seeking feedback on vendor offerings for colocation services."

Cyber

  • FCW – SBA defends data exposure response

  • "Notification of a potential personal data exposure for 8,000 small business loan applicants seeking to keep payrolls humming during the COVID-19 pandemic took longer than the Small Business Administration wanted because the agency had to cut a contract for credit monitoring services for victims, the agency's deputy CIO told a House business subcommittee on Wednesday."

Space Force

  • FNN – New Space Force acquisition office to prioritize integration over bureaucracy

  • "One advantage of the new Space Force organization is that it allows its leaders to focus exclusively on space, rather than divide their attention between space and air. That means the new assistant secretary of the Air Force for space acquisition, once they’ve been nominated and confirmed by Congress, will be able to focus more closely on integrating and synchronizing existing space capability and acquisition programs."

  • Space News – Space Force unveils logo, ‘Semper Supra’ motto

  • "The U.S. Space Force revealed its new logo and motto as the service seeks to build branding and cultural identity. The black-and-silver service logo unveiled July 22 has the delta wing as its central element that is also found in the Space Force seal and flag. There is a “Space Force” horizontally shaped logo and a USSF vertical logo."

Tech

  • FedScoop – Energy Department reveals blueprint for nationwide quantum internet

  • "The Department of Energy identified essential research, engineering and design barriers and near-term goals for developing nationwide quantum internet in a blueprint released Tuesday. DOE‘s 17 National Laboratories will form the foundation of a system for secure communication using quantum mechanics, the prototype for which is expected within the next decade, according to the report."

Pentagon

  • Popular Mechanics – Pentagon Has ‘Off-World Vehicles Not Made on This Earth’

  • "For years, the U.S. government has repeatedly changed its tune regarding its official involvement with UFO research. As recently as February, a Pentagon spokesperson told Popular Mechanics that, while a government program did investigate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and other unexplained aerial phenomena for some time last decade, funding dried up in 2012."
